When balcony floor space is limited, you have two choices: give up, or go vertical. Vertical gardening lets you enjoy greenery without sacrificing precious walking or sitting area.
Wall-mounted planters are a great starting point. Simple metal or wooden racks with pot hooks let you stack plants upwards instead of sideways. Just make sure the wall surface can handle weight and water splashes.
Rail planters that hang on the balcony railing keep pots off the floor and create a nice green edge. Choose secure brackets so they don’t wobble or risk falling.
You can also use tiered stands—narrow ones with multiple levels. Place taller plants at the back and smaller ones in front so everyone gets light.
If drilling is an issue (rented flats, society rules), look for tension rod systems or freestanding vertical frames that lean against the wall.
Combine herbs, trailing plants and small flowering varieties for interest. With vertical gardening, the balcony feels lush but still has room for a chair and your evening chai.
