Nameplates, Door Labels and Privacy: How Much Information Should You Show Outside?

A nameplate at the door feels warm and personal. But in today’s world, it’s fair to ask: how much information is too much?

Traditionally, people wrote full names, designations, sometimes even company names. Now, it’s often safer and cleaner to keep it minimal. First names or surnames alone usually do the job. Courier folks and visitors can still identify you without knowing your entire bio.

Avoid putting phone numbers in large, permanent print on the outside wall. If a delivery person needs it, they usually have it in the app or can call through the system.

If you have kids, resist putting their full names with “so-and-so’s room” stickers on doors. It may look cute but also shares unnecessary information with strangers who move around the building.

For rented homes, sometimes a simple flat number with “Family Name” is enough. You can still add personality through design—fonts, colours, materials—without oversharing.

The idea is to be welcoming, not anonymous—but also not an open data board for anyone passing by.
