If someone in the family has dust allergies or asthma, flooring choice can make daily life a bit easier.
Hard, smooth surfaces like tiles, stone or good-quality vinyl are easier to sweep and mop than thick carpets that trap dust, pollen and pet hair deep inside.
If you love the warmth of carpets or rugs, choose smaller, washable ones rather than wall-to-wall carpet. You can wash or beat them regularly and rotate them out when needed.
Avoid very uneven floors with lots of deep grooves where dust settles and cleaning tools don’t reach properly.
Regular cleaning matters just as much as the material: damp mopping rather than only dry sweeping, vacuuming rugs, and occasionally cleaning under beds and heavy furniture where dust bunnies hide.
Allergy-friendly flooring is about reducing dust reservoirs and making it easier to clean what will accumulate anyway.
