Exotic plants look tempting in nursery displays and online photos, but local and native plants often make your life much easier.
Native species are adapted to your climate, rainfall patterns and local pests. That means they generally need less pampering—fewer special fertilisers, less protection from heat or sudden rains, and sometimes less water.
They’re also more likely to support local birds, butterflies and bees. A balcony with a few native flowering plants can become a tiny micro-habitat, attracting small visitors that make the space feel alive.
Imported or fancy hybrids often look amazing for a while and then struggle when weather swings or care isn’t perfect. If you travel often or are a bit forgetful with watering, native and hardy local plants are more forgiving.
Ask your local nursery about varieties that do well “in this city, in pots”. You’ll usually get suggestions that are tried and tested by other home gardeners in your area.
A garden that fits your climate is much easier to love long-term than one that constantly demands rescue missions.
